Think about how you feel at the end of a day when you find your first free moment so late in the evening that you're too exhausted to enjoy it. If you've had too many days like this, find the help you need to transform your life in Self-Nurture. Harvard psychologist Alice D. Domar, Ph.D., shows you how to restructure your life in a way that lets you breathe. Here are inspiring stories, easy-to-follow exercises, and meditations that will shift your focus from self-sacrifice to self-care. Written with wisdom and humor, Self-Nurture will empower you to develop the same fierce and tender concern for yourself that you've always given to those you love--a gift for anyone who needs to learn the art of self-care.

Just a quick note: The company that we use for our scheduling software just underwent an upgrade to their system and, during this time, there have been a few minor issues reported that may have had an impact on some of our clients. We apologize for any inconvenience or confusion this may have caused.

April 1st is fast approaching but don't be fooled! Ultimately, one of the most important things that you can do is to care for yourself. You've probably heard the analogies about "filling your pitcher before pouring a cup for someone else" and "putting on your oxygen mask before assisting someone else." The same holds true for self care. If you wait for someone else to do it for you, or perhaps wait until there is enough time or money left over, rarely does that ever happen, right? If this sounds a little (or a lot) like you then you have already taken the first step in identifying a character trait that may prevent you from living your best life. If so, why not book a special session today and know that, rather than being self-indulgent, you are taking care of the person who takes care of everyone else? How better to invest in others by caring for yourself and, at the same time,  becoming the ultimate role model? If this better describes someone you know, rather than yourself, than why not think about purchasing them a gift certificate as the ultimate thank you for all they do?

We look forward to seeing you soon. Your table awaits.

Do you know a "Super" Mom?

Picture
If so, we'd love to hear from you! We are taking nominations for our "Super" Mom Contest. Please share with us a short essay as to what makes her so super.  In May, in honor of Mother's Day, both the winning author and the nominee will be awarded a free one-hour massage! We will be sharing the winning essay in our May newsletter and would love it if you would also include a photograph as well. (By entering this contest you give us express permission to share your story.)

Send your nomination to us via e-mail here

Deadline for entry is Sunday, April 23rd

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED?What
is Fascia?

Picture
You may have
heard the term  "myofascial release" and wondered why would I want to do that?

Here's a great
article written by Dr. Christiane Northrup explaining just that. Have more questions? Ask one of our therapists! Many of them regularly incorporate this into their sessions.

As our clients (or clients-to-be, perhaps?) your comfort level is of the utmost importance to us. We know too, that it is sometimes part of our human nature to hesitate to ask a question or speak up about something due to fear of embarrassment. This month we thought we'd share some questions (and answer them) that we know may be on your mind in regards to receiving massage.  Our commitment to your health, well-being, and peace-of-mind are at the forefront of the mission of our practice. Therefore,  in order to be able to provide the best service possible,  we are always open to receiving feedback.  Please do not hesitate to discuss  anything  with us prior to, during, or after your session, or else contact us by phone or by e-mail if we can be of further help.  Now, we hope this puts your mind at ease and leaves you some extra time to ponder some of life's other mysteries!

 Ask a (Massage) Therapist
Things you want to know!

Picture

by
Lindsay West, LMT
Kelley Brown, LMT

Here, we give you the answers to ten things that you've probably always wondered about!

1. What if the pressure is too much or not enough during my massage?
Massage pressure is about working at a healthy therapeutic depth for you body, while keeping you comfortable.  If ever you want more or less pressure PLEASE tell us.  This is your massage and your time so make the most of it.

2. What if I feel like I have to go to the bathroom in the middle of my massage?
We usually ask our clients if they need to use the bathroom before we start but, if you have to go, speak up.  We have robes in our treatment rooms for this express purpose and would rather have you step out to use the bathroom rather than "hold it" and  thereby creating more muscle tension and not be able to relax fully.

3. What if I fall asleep and snore during the massage?
Best compliment ever.!!! If we have helped you to relax enough to fall asleep and snore, then it's a job well done. And, no need to apologize when you snore yourself awake either.  This happens more times than we can count; even to us when we receive our massages!

4. To talk or not to talk?
That is the question... Some people release more than muscle tension on the table, and that's OK. While most of us are not psychotherapists, we are willing to be a compassionate ear.  We try and follow your lead with talking, but it's your session and you get to choose to be silent, talk a little bit, or even a lot.  It's also like the saying about Vegas~  what happens in the treatment room, stays in the treatment room. What you share is confidential.

5. Socks and underwear? Leave them or take them off?
Whatever you are most comfortable with. We ask you to undress to your level of comfort.  The goal is for you to relax and we will respect whatever you choose.  Believe us when we say that we don't care if you are up-to-date on your pedicure! Feel free to let those toes out so that we can massage your feet, but, if you have cold feet, and want to leave them on that's OK too.  (PS: We have herbal packs that we can heat up for you and place on any area of the body that might get chilly!)

6. What if I forgot to shave my legs?
It doesn't matter to us either way.  Shave, don't shave, shave one leg and not the other. No judgements on our end and it doesn't affect the therapeutic value of the massage we give to you.

7. Do I help to move my arms and legs when my therapist moves them?
While we appreciate you "helping" we want you to know that we have your limbs. When we move an arm or a leg it's usually to test your range of motion or to drape that part. Just try and stay relaxed and trust that we can move, shake or stretch you without assistance. If anything is uncomfortable, however, please let us know. It's YOUR session.

8. My stomach always seems to growl when I am on the massage table and I feel like it's distracting.
Have you ever heard the term "rest & digest?"  It's just your body's way of telling you that you are relaxed and it's a good sign! Often, your therapist's stomach will start to growl in response as bodies tend to align and mirror one another!

9. What if I pass gas?
Seriously, everyBODY does it. It's a healthy bodily response and nothing we haven't heard before.

10.  I didn't quite get what I was hoping for out of my session. What should I do?

First and foremost, always speak up. If you can let us know DURING the session that would help us to understand your needs so that we can further tailor the session to meet them.  We try to discuss your goals with you at the beginning of the session but you are always free to let us know what is (or isn't) working. Your comfort and satisfaction are our ultimate goals. Feedback is appreciated and you will not hurt our feelings. Even if you decide you'd  perhaps like to work with another therapist, we get it. Though we all have similar training and credentials, everyone's energy signature is different and we  often feel more comfortable with one person over another. It's totally fine if you want to book with another therapist.  We'd prefer that to you skipping out on massage altogether. We just want you to be healthy, happy, and relaxed!

So now you know that you can ask for more or less pressure, pause massage if you have to go pee, snore/drool, vent about your cousin and her crazy husband, leave the socks off, shave or not, let us do the moving and not worry if you break wind. So if any of these things were preventing you from coming to see us (or see us again) we hope this helps to put you at ease!

What she had to say about this book:

Although this book was originally released in 1998, it's in its sixth printing. And for good reason. This clear, concise, and comprehensive guide is the perfect addition to a massage therapist's library or an expectant mother's treasure-trove of self-care instruction manuals. The book skillfully integrates essential information about pregnancy, birth, and post-partum with appropriate massage and bodywork techniques. Advice on how and when to adapt or avoid particular techniques is a major contribution and although I'd learned many of these things years ago, I appreciated the refresher and learned several new tricks for comfortable positioning through each trimester.
Overall, a well-written, well-researched, and invaluable resource for practitioners and mothers to-be.
Self-care. What does that mean to you? If you are someone who perpetually puts others first this term may be a foreign concept to you. Essentially, contrary to popular belief, the act of  self-care is not a selfish act at all and is actually a form of self-love and compassion. It is necessary  and healthful to engage in this before we give to others. You may have heard the sentiment that you cannot fill up another's cup from an empty vessel. How true this. And, if you have ever been on a plane you know that you are advised to put on your oxygen mask BEFORE helping anyone else. In our day-to-day existence, when we take good care of ourselves we model for our loved ones healthy behavior that can easily be emulated.   So, which of these could you use more of in your life?
  • Sleep/Rest/Quiet time
  • Yoga/Meditation/Breathwork
  • Exercise
  • Healthy, home-made Food
  • Quality time with friends/loved ones
  • Nourishment of your soul
  • Fun & joy
  • Creative leisure activities
  • Time with a good book
  • Cuddle time with a pet
  • Date nights with your spouse/significant others
  • Digital detox (Take a break!)
  • Massage/Bodywork
  • Ask for what you need!
*See article link below for more great self-care info and why it is so important to have self-awareness!

Starting this month we will begin  sharing with you some of our very favorite things. It might be a book, movie, recipe, workout,  self-care routine, etc.  We'd love suggestions from you about what you'd like to know from (or about) each of us.

Feel free to respond to this e-mail with your suggestion. And, please let us a favorite of yours as well!

Look what our LMT, Jodi Wolf, did on her summer vacation! WOOHOO! Our hats off to her for being so brave and living life to the fullest!
Are you feeling stressed out by the state of the world lately?  It's hard not to feel that way these days with all the unrest that is present and, because of our connection to our devices and the 24-hour news cycle, we are never far from hearing distressing news. Also, have you ever noticed, how extremely sensationalized it is? If you are feeling fatigued by this, perhaps it's time to take a break from the external world and focus on your internal world. How would it be if you could just as easily connect with the news of your inner voice and find out what you need in order to feel more at peace? Sometimes the smallest shifts can create profound change (like unplugging from your device and going for a walk in the woods). Most especially, when we feel helpless because we cannot control what is happening around us, it's a great reminder that we are in control of our own personal environment and we can choose whether (and when) to engage with the outside world.  Ask yourself, if you are feeling overwhelmed, what can I do to bring more peace into my life? Sometimes the greatest gift that we can give to others is the gift of our own inner peace and let it extend outward like a ripple in a pond.

Have you had a wonderful response to receiving bodywork? If so, we would love to hear from you. Please consider reviewing us by clicking on the link below:

 Write a YELP review

or providing us with a testimonial for our website. Doing so could help others to become more aware of how massage (and other healing modalities we offer) might help. Thank you in advance! Here's what a few of our clients have already shared:

"I can't say enough good things about Kelley's skill as a massage therapist. After the very first massage she gave me, I was able to get on a bicycle -- for the first time in four years -- and ride twenty miles. I have been hampered by the pain of an old shoulder injury since 1992. Each time I see Kelley, she unfreezes my shoulder a little more and I recover more range of motion. She has an incredible knack for finding and dealing with problem areas I didn't even realize were bothering me. I haven't felt this good inside my body in many years. Give Kelley a try -- you will be amazed at the difference a professional massage can make in how you feel." ~J.

"I have been receiving massages at Back In Touch for well over a year. There are so many benefits of regular massage that I don't know where to begin! I am a kindergarten  teacher and look forward to seeing Kelley every month...I couldn't  survive without  her! "~B.

"I have been a client of Carol Sullivan for about a year and a half and have always enjoyed her massages. About two months ago she started to use a new laser treatment on my back. This laser has loosened up some chronic tension areas in my back tremendously. During the treatment you don't feel a thing, however the next day I can feel definite changes. Some of these areas of muscle tension in my back have literally been there for over ten years. Its a wonderful treatment and I am sold on the laser.  ~R

Yin Yoga & Aromatherapy

The yin practice helps us to restore balance within the energy systems of the body, helping us to be the best that we can be.  Each of the shapes are held for 3 - 5 minutes, taking you deep into the connective tissues of the body, while bringing your attention to the breath and to that quiet place within. Gabrielle, certified aromatherapist, of Nature's Path/Back in Touch Wellness will choose and apply specific therapeutic essential oils from Wisdom of the Earth to compliment the practice and help guide you to that state of relaxation that we all so desire...the place where the mind is quiet, the body is still, and breathing is effortless. The practice concludes with a short meditation to help you connect with the loving spirit that exists within us all. Open to all levels, no yoga experience necessary.

Friday, September 26th
 6:00pm-8:00pm

There is a minimum/maximum number of attendees in order to hold this class,

Happy New Year! Are you someone who makes resolutions? If one of yours is to take better care of yourself, consider making small incremental changes that will yield positive results in improving your health & wellness. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Get adequate sleep
  • Stay hydrated
  • Eat whole, unprocessed foods (including a plentiful and colorful array of fruit & vegetables)
  • Consider eliminating "white"from your diet (flour, rice, dairy, sugar)
  • Get regular exercise (make it fun!)

  •  Take a break from your electronic devices!

Remember that we can resolve to make changes in our lives at any time and don't have to wait for the occasion of  a new year to do so. Do you find that the colder it gets, the harder it is to warm up? Are you tensing against the temperature and find that your shoulders are touching your earlobes, (instantly shortening and contracting your neck muscles)? We can help with this by providing you with a relaxing hot stone massage! With this modality, smooth stones are heated and used for your massage. Some of the stones are places underneath you (along both sides of your spine), some are placed on top of you(on your Chakras), and others are used to massage you in place of the therapist's hands.  You cannot help but to MELT into these warm stones, chasing that wintry chill away!
A Hot Stone Massage is a wonderful way to try something a little different, while still receiving all of the benefits of your regular massage, and more! It is especially good for people with Reynaud's Syndrome.
