AROMATHERAPY: One hears the term a lot these days, but what does it really mean?

Having given a talk this past week at the Granby Public Library  entitled “Aromatherapy: Myths and Truths” I thought I would share with you about what constitutes aromatherapy. Aromatherapy refers to the use of essential oils extracted from flowers, trees and plants for therapeutic purposes. Medicinal aromatherapy is the practice of administering these pure essential oil  (essences) for therapeutic healing purposes.

While aromatherapy has been practiced for thousands of years by ancient civilizations (Chinese, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman) the official  term wasn't coined until the early 1900’s by the French chemist Dr. Rene-Maurice Gattefosse. Similar to the current trends in organic, sustainable, and slow-food movement, many people are rediscovering the benefits of getting back to nature and accessing simpler, gentler forms of healing. Therefore, while it may seem
like something new, in actuality, it has been practiced for a long time.

Aromatherapy is about healing with natural plant substances. Unfortunately, the term has
become ubiquitous and is used (often incorrectly) to advertise and sell many  products which have absolutely nothing to do with healing, and in most cases, can actually be harmful to your health. When choosing products for your healing, your home, or for personal care products please be sure to buy from reputable sources and read ingredient labels. If you wouldn't eat it then you probably shouldn't be inhaling it or putting it on your skin.  And, be very cautious when you see the word “fragrance” listed on any label, as there are a myriad of undisclosed synthetic ingredients that fall into this category.

When used properly, aromatherapy can be a very effective form of healing because our human DNA is closely related to that of the plant and tree kingdom. Consequently, our bodies easily recognize the healing power of the essences and will allow them to work in a harmonious way without negative side-effects, which is not often the case with modern day pharmaceuticals.  Because is safe and gentle anyone can benefit from this type of healing and any condition that arises (whether in mind, body, or spirit) can be helped with the practice of aromatherapy. There are many ways to experience them and it important to
consult with a trained aroma therapist to decide what is best for you and your healing process.

Here at Back in Touch Wellness our aroma therapists use only medicinal grade essences
which are safe, pure and are unadulterated.   When using them for medicinal healing, it is absolutely essential that you know what you are getting. Please contact us if you have any further questions or are interested in scheduling a session for yourself or someone you love.
