I recently took a short hiatus from my regular schedule (along Lindsay West, LMT ~also from Back in Touch Wellness Center LLC) in order to participate in advanced prenatal/postpartum massage training. During the course of our extensive three-day training session, we learned, among other things, how to properly position our expectant clients in order to help take pressure off the mother’s body and then to administer stretches and strokes conducive to a those in the prenatal state. It sounds simple, but there is much to know about applying the healing art of massage to those in this condition.
There are many benefits of prenatal massage, some of which include:
- Restores postural balance
- Reduces swelling in legs and feet
- Lowers blood pressure
- Minimizes nausea (did you know there is a pressure point on the arm called PC6 that eliminates nausea?)
- Aids in relaxation and feelings of well-being for both mother and baby
And, once the baby is born, it's important to know that postpartum care is just as important. The new mother’s body has been through a lot of changes and is often still not fully recovered until six months after giving birth.
Benefits of postpartum massage including:
- Restores postural balance
- Elevates mood-helps
- Can reduce scar tissue
- Aids in relaxation and feelings of well-being
Massage makes a wonderful addition to prenatal and postpartum care and we encourage all parents to be to consider making massage therapy a part of their support on the journey towards parenthood.
We send all expectant moms our warmest wishes and are here to help you along through this process. Please let us know if you have any questions or would like to book an appointment with Kelley or Lindsay. For your convenience, we offer sessions seven days a week, including evening appointments.
PS: A gift certificate for pre-natal massage makes a wonderful shower gift!!!
